Iloilo Content Creator Suffers Severe Burns After Setting Himself on Fire for Views
ILOILO, Philippines – A content creator from Calinog, Iloilo sustained second-degree burns after drinking gasoline and setting himself on fire in a desperate attempt to attract more viewers online.
According to GMA Regional TV’s John Sala, the victim, Isagani Canja, was a former tricycle driver who transitioned to full-time content creation. His extreme stunt, however, resulted in severe injuries that required hospitalization.

Regretting his actions, Canja urged other aspiring content creators to avoid risking their lives for online fame.
“I hope others will not follow what I did because it was very dangerous. To newbies out there, please don’t do similar stunts in your vlogs,” he said in vernacular.

Medical professionals warned that exposure to petroleum gases can lead to coma, cancer, or even death let alone drinking gasoline.
“Chronic exposure to petroleum gases can be deadly. How much more if ingested? This should be completely avoided,” said Iloilo Provincial Health Office head Ma. Socorro Quinon.

Experts say the intense competition in online content creation is pushing influencers to take extreme measures for engagement and monetization.
“Many see content creation as a way to earn money. But it shouldn’t be treated as a competition where extreme stunts are necessary just to gain attention,” explained sociologist Ma. Elisa Baliao.
