Anne Curtis Backs Sandy’s Act After Recalling Near-Fatal Jellyfish Sting

MANILA, Philippines – Actress and TV host Anne Curtis has voiced her support for Sandy’s Act, a proposed bill aimed at improving medical and emergency services in tourist destinations, particularly in response to jellyfish sting incidents.

Curtis, who nearly lost her life after being stung by a box jellyfish in 2014 while filming Dyesebel, took to Instagram on March 10 to share her personal experience and advocate for better safety measures.

Sandy’s Act: A Push for Safer Tourist Spots

Senate Bill No. 2971, also known as Sandy’s Act, was filed by Senator Risa Hontiveros following the tragic death of six-year-old Sandy Garrovillas in October 2023. Sandy died from a jellyfish sting at a resort due to the lack of proper medical attention.

The bill seeks to enhance research, prevention, and emergency response to protect children and tourists from natural hazards in Philippine waters.

Anne Curtis Calls for More Jellyfish Awareness

Curtis stressed the need for better research on deadly jellyfish species found in Philippine waters and the specific anti-venom needed for each type.

“There needs to be more research and awareness on venomous jellyfish in our waters and what kind of anti-venom would be needed,” she said.

Recalling her painful experience, she added:

“As someone who went through excruciating pain from just a mere brush of three tentacles, I can tell you it’s no joke. To see and hear of little lives lost to fatal jellyfish stings is devastating.”

Celebrity Support for the Bill

Other celebrities, including Bela Padilla and Janno Gibbs, also expressed their support for Sandy’s Act in Hontiveros’ comments section.

“Beautiful waters mean safe waters,” Padilla commented.

Garrovillas’ parents shared their heartbreaking story during a Senate hearing on March 6, hoping the bill will prevent future tragedies.

With Curtis and other advocates pushing for awareness, Sandy’s Act is gaining momentum in its mission to improve safety measures for beachgoers and tourists in the Philippines.
